Optical Transceivers Explained: Types, Standards & Selection

Date: 2024-02-22

What Is an Optical Transceiver?

An optical transceiver converts electrical signals to optical signals (and vice versa), enabling fiber optic networks to communicate with switches, routers, and servers. It's the critical interface between your equipment and the fiber cable.

Common Form Factors

Type Data Rate Typical Use
SFP 1.25 Gbps Legacy networks, monitoring
SFP+ 10 Gbps Enterprise, data center access
SFP28 25 Gbps Server connections, 5G fronthaul
QSFP+ 40 Gbps Data center aggregation
QSFP28 100 Gbps Core networks, cloud infrastructure
QSFP-DD 400 Gbps Hyperscale data centers

Transceiver Types by Application

SR (Short Range)

  • Distance: Up to 100m
  • Fiber: OM3/OM4 multimode
  • Use: Data center intra-connects

LR (Long Range)

  • Distance: 10km
  • Fiber: OS2 singlemode
  • Use: Campus, metro networks

ER (Extended Range)

  • Distance: 40km
  • Fiber: OS2 singlemode
  • Use: WAN, regional backbones

ZR (Extended Long Haul)

  • Distance: 80km+
  • Fiber: OS2 singlemode
  • Use: Long-distance transport

Wavelength Options

Common wavelengths:

  • 850nm — Multimode (SR)
  • 1310nm — Singlemode short reach (LR)
  • 1550nm — Singlemode long reach (ER/ZR)
  • CWDM/DWDM — Multiple channels on single fiber

How to Select the Right Transceiver

  1. Check switch compatibility — Some vendors lock transceivers to their equipment
  2. Match data rate — Don't overspend on 100G when 10G suffices
  3. Calculate distance — Add 20% margin for patch panels and bends
  4. Choose fiber type — Multimode for short, singlemode for long
  5. Consider temperature — Industrial (-40°C to 85°C) vs commercial (0°C to 70°C)

Carefiber Transceiver Portfolio

  • SFP/SFP+/SFP28 for 1G-25G applications
  • QSFP+/QSFP28 for 40G-100G aggregation
  • CWDM/DWDM for wavelength multiplexing
  • Industrial temperature options for outdoor cabinets
  • Compatible with major switch vendors
